Understanding the procedure

What is IUI Treatment?

IUI treatment in Delhi has become one of the most sought-after fertility procedures for couples who are struggling to conceive naturally but do not yet require the complexity and cost of IVF. IUI — Intrauterine Insemination — is a straightforward, minimally invasive procedure in which washed and concentrated sperm is placed directly into a woman’s uterus at the time of ovulation, significantly improving the chances of fertilisation.

Doctors typically recommend IUI as a first-line fertility treatment for couples dealing with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, cervical mucus issues, or for those using donor sperm. It is less expensive, less physically demanding, and less medically complex than IVF — making it an accessible starting point for many couples.

A straightforward, minimally invasive procedure — and for many couples, the right place to begin.

At KIC Delfinium Fertility Centre, South Extension I, New Delhi, IUI is performed under the supervision of Dr. Nalini Gupta — one of India’s most experienced fertility specialists. The centre combines clinical expertise, advanced sperm preparation technology, and compassionate care to maximise the chances of success with every IUI cycle.

Step by step

The IUI Process Explained

Understanding exactly what happens during an IUI cycle removes uncertainty and helps you feel prepared for every stage. Our seven-step protocol — refined over four decades — covers everything from your first consultation to the pregnancy test.

Each step is timed with precision, monitored carefully, and supported by Dr. Gupta’s team. The full cycle typically spans two to three weeks.

The 7 steps of IUI treatment
1

Consultation & Diagnosis

Thorough review of medical history, transvaginal ultrasound, hormone tests (FSH, LH, AMH, progesterone) and semen analysis confirm IUI is the right path.

2

Ovarian Stimulation

Low-dose fertility medications stimulate the ovaries to produce one or two mature follicles — improving the chance of success per cycle.

3

Ultrasound Monitoring

Every two to three days, scans track follicle growth. When follicles reach 18–20mm in size, you are ready for the trigger phase.

4

Trigger Injection

An hCG trigger injection induces ovulation. The IUI procedure is timed for approximately 36 hours later — precisely when the egg is released.

5

Sperm Preparation

Sperm washing separates highly motile, healthy sperm using advanced density gradient centrifugation — a critical factor influencing outcomes.

6

Insemination

A thin, flexible catheter gently delivers prepared sperm through the cervix into the uterus. The procedure takes only five to ten minutes.

7

Two-Week Wait

Progesterone supplementation supports implantation. After fourteen days, a beta-hCG blood test confirms whether pregnancy has occurred.

Realistic expectations

IUI Success Rates by Age

Success rates per cycle are influenced primarily by age and the underlying cause of infertility. Cumulative success across three to six cycles is considerably higher.

Expert IUI care under Dr. Nalini Gupta
Age Group Success Per Cycle
Under 3015 – 20%
30 – 3510 – 15%
35 – 405 – 10%
Over 402 – 5%
Cumulative over 3 cycles (under 35)30 – 40%

Sperm Quality

Best results occur when total motile sperm count (TMSC) is at least 5–10 million after washing.

Fallopian Tube Health

At least one open, functional tube is required. An HSG test confirms tubal patency before treatment.

Timing of Insemination

The single most controllable variable — precise monitoring and trigger timing maximise success.

Endometrial Receptivity

How welcoming the uterine lining is to implantation. Progesterone support helps optimise this.

Making the right choice

IUI versus IVF

The answer depends on your specific diagnosis, age, and how long you have been trying to conceive.

IUI vs IVF comparison
Factor IUI IVF
Average Cost₹8K – 25K₹1L – 2.5L
Success Per Cycle10 – 20%38 – 50%
Procedure TypeNon-surgicalSurgical
Recovery TimeSame day1 – 2 days
Pain LevelMinimalModerate
Best ForMild infertilityComplex cases
Blocked TubesNoYes
Severe Male FactorNoYes (ICSI)

IUI is the right starting point when the fertility challenge is mild or unexplained, when both tubes are open, and when sperm parameters are acceptable. IVF is the better choice when tubes are blocked, when sperm count is very low, when the woman is over 38, or when multiple IUI cycles have failed.

Eligibility

Who is a Good Candidate?

Understanding whether you are a good candidate saves time, money, and emotional energy.

Well Suited

  • Unexplained infertility — trying for 12+ months with no clear cause
  • Mild male factor infertility — slightly below normal sperm count or motility
  • Cervical factor infertility — cervical mucus is too thick or hostile
  • Use of donor sperm — for single women, same-sex couples, or no viable sperm
  • Ovulatory dysfunction — irregular cycles benefit from medicated IUI

Not Recommended

  • Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Severe male factor infertility — IVF with ICSI required
  • Women over 40 with significantly reduced ovarian reserve
  • Patients with significant endometriosis affecting tube function
  • Couples with previous IVF failure from egg or sperm quality issues
Your visit

On the Day of Your IUI

Knowing what the day looks like removes anxiety and helps you feel in control of the process.

Morning

Sample collection & preparation

Your partner provides a semen sample at the clinic (or donor sperm is prepared). Sperm washing takes one to two hours in the laboratory.

Procedure

The insemination itself

You lie on an examination table. The doctor gently passes a thin catheter through the cervix and deposits the sperm. Five to ten minutes total. Most women describe it as mild discomfort — not pain. No anaesthesia required.

Immediately after

Rest & return to routine

Rest at the clinic for ten to fifteen minutes. No bed rest needed. Most women return to normal daily activities — including work — on the same day.

Aftercare

Implantation support

Progesterone tablets or suppositories support the uterine lining during the implantation window. Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive stress during the two-week wait.

Day 14

Pregnancy test

A blood beta-hCG test confirms whether the procedure was successful. Avoid home pregnancy tests before this date — they can give misleading results.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions couples ask most often before starting IUI.

Is IUI painful?

For most women, IUI is not painful. The procedure involves a thin catheter passing through the cervix, which may cause a sensation similar to mild period cramps. The discomfort lasts only a few seconds. Women with a narrow or angled cervix may experience slightly more discomfort, but the procedure is routinely completed without anaesthesia.

How long does the IUI procedure take?

The insemination itself takes five to ten minutes. Including sperm preparation time and a short rest period after the procedure, plan to spend approximately two to three hours at the clinic on the day of your IUI.

Can I go to work after IUI?

Yes. IUI requires no recovery time, and most women return to work and normal daily activities on the same day. There are no physical restrictions after the procedure, though avoiding intense exercise and unnecessary stress during the two-week wait is generally advised.

What is the main difference between IUI and IVF?

IUI places washed sperm inside the uterus, allowing fertilisation to occur naturally inside the body. IVF involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilising them with sperm in a laboratory, and transferring the resulting embryo back into the uterus. IVF is a surgical procedure with higher success rates but also higher cost and greater physical demands. IUI is non-surgical, less expensive, and appropriate for milder fertility challenges.

How many IUI cycles should I try before moving to IVF?

Most fertility specialists recommend three to six IUI cycles before considering a move to IVF, depending on age and diagnosis. For women over 38, the recommendation may be to attempt fewer IUI cycles given the time-sensitive nature of ovarian reserve. Your specialist at KIC Delfinium will advise you based on your specific situation.

What is the cost of IUI treatment in Delhi?

A natural IUI cycle in Delhi costs approximately ₹5,000–₹10,000 in total, while a medicated IUI cycle including stimulation medications and monitoring typically costs ₹10,000–₹25,000. KIC Delfinium offers competitive, transparent pricing. Contact the centre at +91 9599754455 for a personalised estimate.

Does IUI work for male infertility?

IUI can be effective for mild male factor infertility — where sperm count and motility are below normal but not severely impaired. The sperm washing process concentrates the best-quality sperm and significantly improves the number reaching the fallopian tube. For severe male infertility, IVF with ICSI is more suitable. Read more about male infertility treatment.

What are the side effects of IUI?

IUI is a low-risk procedure. The most common side effects are mild cramping on the day of the procedure and light spotting. With medicated IUI, the stimulation drugs (particularly injectables) can occasionally cause bloating, mood changes, and in rare cases, mild ovarian hyperstimulation. Your doctor will monitor you closely to prevent complications. Infection after IUI is very rare when performed under sterile clinical conditions.
