Hearing that your egg reserve is lower than expected can bring up a lot of questions, and understandably, some worry. One option that’s being discussed more often in fertility clinics today is PRP ovarian rejuvenation, and it’s worth understanding properly before deciding if it’s right for you.

What Exactly Is PRP Ovarian Rejuvenation?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. It’s derived from your own blood through a process that separates out the platelet layer, which carries a high concentration of growth factors and proteins involved in tissue repair.

Once prepared, this plasma is injected into the ovarian tissue with the aim of supporting follicle health and potentially reactivating follicles that have gone dormant. It’s the same biological principle used in PRP treatments for joints and skin, applied here specifically to reproductive tissue.

This is a relatively newer application within fertility care, and while early results have encouraged more clinics to offer it, it’s still evolving as a treatment. Setting realistic expectations from the start makes a real difference in how patients experience the process.

Signs That PRP Fertility Treatment Might Be Worth Discussing

Your fertility specialist may bring up PRP ovarian rejuvenation if your case includes:

  • A low AMH reading, commonly under 1.5 ng/ml
  • A reduced antral follicle count visible on a transvaginal scan
  • One or more IVF cycles with fewer eggs retrieved than expected
  • Early perimenopausal changes while you’re still hoping to conceive with your own eggs
  • A wish to try every reasonable option before turning to donor egg IVF

None of these on their own automatically mean PRP is right for you — a proper hormonal and ultrasound assessment is needed to confirm whether you’re a suitable candidate.

Inside the Procedure Room: How It’s Done

Many patients feel more at ease once they know what to actually expect. Here’s the general process:

  1. Drawing blood – A blood sample, typically around 50-60 ml, is drawn just like a regular blood test.
  2. Spinning the sample – The blood goes through a centrifuge at controlled speed and duration to isolate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest.
  3. Checking the ovaries – Before the injection, a detailed ultrasound with colour Doppler is done to measure ovarian size and check blood flow patterns.
  4. Injecting the PRP – A thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall into the ovary, and the plasma is injected into the cortex — the outer region where most follicles are found. The needle direction is adjusted so the plasma reaches multiple areas rather than just one spot.
  5. Short recovery – After a brief observation period, most patients are able to go home the same day.

The procedure is done under anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour from start to finish.

What to Expect in the Weeks After

It takes time for ovarian tissue to respond, so don’t expect overnight changes. Specialists generally recommend waiting at least one full menstrual cycle before rechecking AMH and follicle counts, and sometimes longer for a clearer picture.

Response to PRP varies quite a bit between individuals. Some women see a measurable improvement in their follicle count or hormone levels, while others may not notice a significant change. It’s best approached as one tool within a larger fertility strategy rather than a guaranteed solution on its own.

PRP Care at KICDelfinium

At KICDelfinium, PRP ovarian rejuvenation is offered after a thorough review of your fertility history, hormone profile, and previous treatment outcomes. The focus is on figuring out whether this procedure genuinely makes sense for your situation, rather than offering it as a default option to every patient with low AMH.

If you’re weighing your choices before considering donor eggs, or simply want to understand if PRP could improve your chances with your own eggs, a detailed consultation is the right starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does PRP ovarian rejuvenation hurt?

The procedure is performed under anesthesia, so there’s no pain during the injection itself. Some mild discomfort or spotting afterward is normal and usually settles within a day or two.

2. How is PRP different from regular fertility medication?

Fertility medications stimulate the follicles you already have to grow and mature. PRP works differently — it’s aimed at supporting ovarian tissue health and potentially activating follicles that were previously inactive.

3. Will I need more than one PRP session?

It depends on your response. Some women benefit from one session, while others may be advised to repeat the treatment after reviewing follow-up test results.

4. Is this treatment safe?

Since the plasma comes from your own blood, the chances of an allergic reaction or infection are low. Still, like any medical procedure, it should only be done after a proper evaluation by a qualified specialist.

5. Can I try to conceive naturally after PRP, or do I need IVF?

Both paths are possible depending on your individual case. Some women attempt natural conception afterward, while others move on to an IVF cycle using their improved ovarian response.

6. How do I know if I’m a good candidate?

A blood test for AMH, along with a transvaginal ultrasound to count antral follicles, gives your specialist the information needed to advise whether PRP is a suitable option for you.

Final Thoughts

A low AMH result doesn’t have to be the end of the road. PRP ovarian rejuvenation is one of several options worth exploring, and understanding how it works can help you make a more informed decision alongside your specialist.
